The Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga has thrown her weight behind President Cyril Ramaphosa’s declaration that gender-based violence is a national crisis.
Chikunga says GBV is a deeply sensitive issue that affects every woman, regardless of status or position.
Her remarks come as South African women and allies staged a historic nationwide shutdown, led by the movement Women for Change, in protest against GBV and femicide.
Chikunga emphasised the importance of unity in tackling what she called, a scourge that continues to devastate communities across the nation.
